And really build sports entertainment and residential and commercial around it and really have an urban development company that is fueled by the strength of a brand of an NBA team. The world is incredible. And this is how cities evolve. Thats just my view, Lasry said. Michael Red: It's becoming that and has become that. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? But it's also, listen like I wish, I have patience for nothing, and I think what I'm learning and trying to get a grip of is like how do we chip away over every issue of social justice. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. Those are simple, its his genius. Peter: it worked in such a great way for me and with a magic wand really evolved into one of the most incredible jobs ever. Peter Feigin: Yeah. How do you care about it, and Jon Horst is so great on the basketball side. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. How exhausting was the bubble? We call it volundeering. The one thing about you that I've seen over the years is that you keep the culture in a funny mood, right? And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. I don't know how to talk about that other than like my dad was like my hero and he was selfless and kind of quietly just did anything for anybody and kind of was like that's how I had value for him. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. She's terrific and just the whole organization and I'm honored to be a part of the family, man. Peter: The ice cream truck. John: He was gone. Michael Red: Is there a pivotal moment that you can think of, even as a teenager or as a young kid, that you'd bet on yourself in a major, major way? We dont compete against each other in arena revenue and local media revenue. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? This is learning on the job, right? Peter: The same he is, everywhere else. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. Peter Feigin: And you've got to put with everything going on in the world, there's got to be that balance of like, "Hey, there are priorities." Off the court it is best practice. He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. John: Right. I talk about it all the time with my wife, with my brother, with everything. None could have anticipated how it would grow over the years, or the motley crew of characters who would be drawn to it. Michael Red: The podcast, as you know, is all about betting on yourself and talk about what that means to you, Peter, like betting on yourself. And people like Wisconsinites are close to imagine a fast-talking New Yorker coming in and kind of standing on the soapbox promising the world and kind of great change and a great building. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. That's not a "here we got to the finish line." He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. Peter: We have two kids. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. John: It looks amazing. Crazy simple story grew up in New York City, Manhattan on the Upper East Side, went to high school in Brooklyn. Then Chris Middleton next to him, which is almost the same, who are these high quality character folks who happen to be all stars in skill level. And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you. When I was looking at the website, I was like, man, I cant wait to taste that chicken. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. We always tell people, listen, if you want to work here, youre going to have to collaborate with people. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? Peter Feigin: Well, long story short, like, six years ago, he calls me and he says, "Hey, can you get to Milwaukee to go meet with Senator Kohl. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Peter Feigin: I think nobody could have imagined what that does to you on a personal psychological emotional level. It's like how do I hold my impulsive self to shut the hell up. Peter: Start from, yeah, start from the beginning. And probably about 15 years ago, Mark Lazari was looking to explore buying teams and they were in a parent conference, and my brother just said to him, Hey, my twin brothers over at Madison Square Garden he runs the marketing there he understands the P&L you probably get a kick out of him coming with you and giving you an opinion on what that was. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy. Peter: You are doing your employees, your service, your limited partners so it is a huge process. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. I mean, the fact that players had just had it is no surprise. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. Is this coming? I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. Peter Feigin: And then I think, the bigger picture is we really have to accelerate becoming the world's team. Again, under the umbrella of collecting people and really having experience in a big way. I asked every good question, every dumb question you could possibly imagine to really learn. How do we sit here and I think like, how could the Millwaukee Bucks not be, not Americas team, but Globals team. How did you put the stadium deal together? How do we keep driving? Peter Feigin: Well, I think, like you talked about the opportunity for a great historic organization like this to embrace a former Olympian, it's all-star, like a person who's current in the game and really is an asset. Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. The arena was, if the arena didnt happen, nothing happens, and that was a public-private. By the way I never wouldve said this seven years ago, I think you have to be involved. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. The building will also be the focal point of a 30-acre development in downtown Milwaukee, an urban revitalization project that Feigin believes in. That was, Peter: That was it. And they all live kind of the job we all live kind of each other's lives. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin speaking at the opening of the team's new training center in downtown Milwaukee as Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett . Peter: We knew each other. Peter Feigin: So, I mean, this is talk about, "You never know what's going to happen and where." If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. And you immediately go into, "What does this look like? And we're going to be the No. I mean, nobody understands like players have a handful of days off the entire season. Some people dont like to hear that anymore. And so, talk about that and your leadership style, generosity and how important it is to give back. I think that's something that you work with every day. Like you said at the top of the show, very few human beings even get to be in this position in any professional sports level. We had weekly calls. That is like what you live for. That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Michael Red: That's great advice. John: Your mom was part of the George Lois generation and Jerry Della Femina and then Donny Deutschs father David Deutsch. But talk about that nuance and being in leaders on the social injustice play. Peter: heres the market. This is the most, this is fun of life. The facilities part was easy. What are the balances of management, of coaching of anything else? Then I think the big huge growth for NBA is how do we really figure out what our media is domestically and what it is internationally like in the next two years, which is changing dramatically. But it was so much fun. They were trying to think of something that would be like. It found him. Peter Feigin, president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Where does it sit? By Gabe Friedman October 2, 2017 2:58 pm. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. A, if you werent doing this and I know this is a dream job. You can imagine, yes, Id rather be in Miami for 180 days, no question. Now, the lockdown has forced some of The Runs longstanding members to confront their athletic mortality. Well, that's you. Really surprised the 15 largest companies aren't following our lead and kind of like, "Where are they?" Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. And then we kind of sat there until like, "Oh, my God." And that's tough, too. You can always have free coffee. And Khris parks in a handicap space, because five minutes he's in. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . Either it came from Khris Middleton or Jack [crosstalk 00:02:21]. It's really best of class.". And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? So, Giannis and I have an interesting relationship and sometimes I need him, sometimes he needs me. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? How do you create a hermetically sealed bubble for people to compete in on a campus and all the thousands of touch points, people, logistics and everything? Just go beyond the scoreboard and championships that you guys get to make in your community, that you are proud of, Peter. The facilities part was easy. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. I encourage it, and selfishly, its a fun way to network and deal with people. But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? Last Wednesday, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin told the Rotary Club of Madison that Milwaukee is "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experienced in my life." The full quote,. Its not just the players, but the way you get to honor so many of the others who put their blood, sweat and tears into helping make it a possibility. I've been telling him. Not like how to just excel in basketball. Peter Feigin: I mean, just different ways, we started to think about doing this. John Shegerian: This edition of the Impact podcast is brought to you by ERI. These guys are human beings. We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. And the task at hand here is like the more successful we are on the court, the more successful we are on the business, the more opportunity we will have to do other things. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. As Feigin hones the Bucks' in-arena and digital strategy, The Giannis Effect is the guide. She couldn't be more supporting from everything. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. Youre the ultimate insider. He notes that with the Bucks also opening a G League team calledthe Wisconsin Herdthis past fall, there was internal debate about making the investment, but Edens was a notable force moving the decision forward. This is COVID, how do we do it? Peter: Yeah, I will just tell you that was one of the most fun dreamlike things for us ever. I'm so proud of him and the team and the roster. Ive never seen less arguing in a serious pickup game, said Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. Here in a million person city and your ability to affect change, your platform, your ability to really make a difference is so incredible. So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. We can expose it as like, "Here, we're the example in Milwaukee." Hes with us today. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? A billionaire? And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions.
